About St. Mark’s Episcopal Church

Welcome to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Warwick, Rhode Island, a parish rooted in the rich tradition of the Episcopal Church and committed to living out the love of Christ in our community.

Who We Are

St. Mark’s is a community gathered not because we have everything figured out, but because we believe God meets us in real life, in joy, in struggle, in questions, and in hope. At its heart, a parish exists to be a place where people encounter God and one another in worship, in service, and in the quiet, steady work of becoming more fully who God created us to be.

We believe the Church is not a building but a body, a living, breathing community called to reflect Christ’s love in the world. That means we value honesty, compassion, and authenticity. Whether you have been part of church your whole life or are simply curious, there is a place for you here.

Our Faith & Tradition

As an Episcopal parish, we are part of the global Anglican tradition, shaped by scripture, tradition, and reason. Our worship follows the Book of Common Prayer, a centuries-old guide that connects us to Christians across time and place.

You will find our services both reverent and accessible, rooted in ancient practices and grounded in the realities of today’s world. We celebrate the sacraments, especially Holy Eucharist, also known as Communion, as central to our life together.

We are a church that values thoughtful faith. Questions are welcome here. Doubt is not the opposite of faith. It can be a part of it.

How We Are Different

People often ask how the Episcopal Church differs from Roman Catholicism. While we share much in common, including historic roots, liturgical worship, and the sacraments, there are some key distinctions:

  • Leadership: The Episcopal Church is led by bishops and governed with the participation of clergy and laypeople. We are part of the worldwide Anglican Communion and are not under the authority of the Pope.
  • Clergy: Episcopal priests may be married, and women and LGBTQ+ folks are fully ordained as deacons, priests, and bishops.
  • Theology: We embrace a broad and inclusive approach to theology, allowing room for diverse perspectives within the life of the Church.
  • Inclusion: The Episcopal Church is committed to the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals in all aspects of church life, including marriage and ordination.

Why We Exist

We believe a parish exists to be a place of encounter where God’s presence is made known in word, sacrament, and community. In a world that can feel isolating and overwhelming, the Church is called to be a refuge, a place of healing, and a source of hope.

At St. Mark’s, this means:

  • Gathering for meaningful, liturgical worship
  • Serving our neighbors with compassion and care
  • Creating space for spiritual growth and honest conversation
  • Walking alongside one another through every season of life

We do not claim to be perfect, but we are committed to showing up again and again, trusting that God is at work among us.
